When we got in our room at the ER, the Dr. said she thought it was a common thing that happens to kids when their elbow comes out of socket or something like that. She said all she had to do was put it back into place, which will hurt, but then Hadley will be fine. When she was getting a grip on Hadley's arm, Andy pointed out how bent and weird her arm looked. She did agree and then decided maybe she should get xrays first.
Good thing she did because her arm was broke and if she would have yanked on it, that would have been horrible!
There are 2 bones in your forearm. Hadley broke one all the way through and the other one was bent and cracked half way through. They put a temporary cast on her and we had to go to a bone Dr. the next day.
At that apt, the Dr. explained to us that he needed to bend the arm back into place before he could cast her and in order to do that he had to put her under.
A little fearful we questioned him because of our last experience, but we finally agreed to it.
We don't really like or trust this Dr because he is way too sure of himself and tried to tell us Hadley will have to be in a brace for her scoliosis till she is 18 when he knows nothing about her or this new casting method! A little frustrating dealing with somebody who doesn't know Hadley and her situation, but thinks he does. He was no Dr. Sturm from Shriners!
The next day, we had to be down at the hospital at 5 am; therefore got up at 3 am in order to get there in time. To our surprise, the hospital was not even open for people to come until 5:30 am(that's another story I don't want to go into!).
Everything went well. The nurses were amazed at how well she did! Well, you have to figure, she's only done this 9 times already! The only hard part was dealing with nurses who don't know Hadley. We pretty much told them how she is and what her needs are in this situation. They were all agreeable except one nurse who insisted on giving her Tylenol with Codeine. Hadley hates taking medicine and it usually doesn't agree with her. And sure enough later that day, she was feeling nauseous and just horrible! Note to that nurse: Mommy and daddy know best!!
Hadley is doing pretty well now all casted up. She already knows cast life so this wasn't too much of a shock for her or us. She is a bit more limited than she already was, but accepts it and keeps trying to do things on her own. Thankfully, she is not too stubborn to ask for help when needed.
The Dr. said he thinks she'd only have to be in this cast for 3-4 weeks since the younger you are, the faster you heal. We have an apt to get an xray and to see how she is healing in 2 weeks.
Being in a cast for 3-4 weeks for Hadley is nothing since she is usually in her scoli cast for 12 weeks!
Speaking of her scoliosis cast, we have GOOD NEWS!!!! As of yesterday, Hadley has permission to come out of her scoli cast the wk before Christmas. This means a CAST FREE Christmas! What better gift is that other than the gift of Jesus! We will then travel to Shiners the first wk of January to get her brace and to see what her correction was from this cast. I am so so so excited! The year of 2009 is hopefully the last year Hadley will have to be in any casts! Praise God for that!
